“It’s All About Lizards!” includes works that concern conspiratorial whisperings about a shape-shifting race of reptiles alongside works simply content to bask in the wonder of all things scaly and slimy. It’s the viewer’s choice whether to get wrapped up in paranoia or marvel at the beauty of lizard-kind, or perhaps even just get a little grossed out.
On a more conspiratorial end of this spectrum, the exhibition is anchored to a monumental painting by Sarah Elizabeth Hall depicting a reptilian pietà attended by grovelling world leaders. Ominous clawed hands clasp at Lee Nachum’s picture plane. Meanwhile, Ben Mendelewicz captures a glitchy grid of therianthropic freeze-framed portraits stretched and malformed, perhaps serving as YouTube evidence that David Icke’s illuminati Archons truly are among us. Mining a more naively folkish way to depict or imagine otherworldly overlords, Matthew Giordano presents alien visitors walking the earth. Deirdre Sargent and Phillip Birch’s works suggest a media-based cultish post-human mythology while Devon Clapp’s work looks backward to earlier mainstream pop-cultural representations of scaly monsters. Joe Kay subverts the branding of our cold-blooded corporate masters with a custom squatty potty.
Together these and other works pay homage to lizards of all different shapes and sizes. You are invited to celebrate these creatures at a reception Friday, September 28th, 7-9pm.
